Description

Systematic position. The dark rover ant (Brachymyrmex obscurior) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. These small, non-stinging ants are recognized as invasive pests that have successfully expanded their range across various tropical and subtropical regions, often thriving in greenhouses and residential landscapes.

Affected crops. The species is highly problematic for ornamental nurseries, indoor plant collections, and various greenhouse crops. They do not directly feed on plant tissues in a way that kills the plant, but their agricultural significance is tied to their symbiotic relationship with sap-sucking insects like aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects.

Biology and life cycle. Brachymyrmex obscurior colonies are polygynous, meaning they possess multiple queens, which makes the colony structure highly resilient and capable of budding off into new satellite nests. Their life cycle includes the standard holometabolous development: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They are extremely effective at colonizing new areas via movement of soil, mulch, or nursery pots.

Damage character and economic impact. The primary damage is indirect but severe. By tending to and protecting honeydew-producing pests like aphids and mealybugs, these ants prevent natural predators (such as lady beetles or parasitic wasps) from controlling the pest populations. This leads to rampant infestations of sap-suckers, causing plant yellowing, stunted growth, and the accumulation of sooty mold.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Recommended strategies include:

  • Application of bait stations containing non-repellent insecticides.
  • Control of associated pests like aphids using systemic insecticides.
  • Sanitation of greenhouse surfaces and soil management.
