Brachyplatys

Systematic position. Brachyplatys is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Plataspidae. These insects are commonly referred to as shield bugs or globular stink bugs due to their distinct, compact, and rounded body shape. They are recognized as significant agricultural pests in many regions, particularly in tropical and subtropical climates.

Host crops. This pest primarily attacks plants within the family Fabaceae. Economically important crops such as soybeans, common beans, cowpeas, and peanuts are highly susceptible. In addition to cultivated plants, Brachyplatys species often inhabit wild leguminous weeds, which serve as alternate hosts and allow the population to persist throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Nymphs go through five distinct instars before reaching maturity. Eggs are typically laid in regular, double-row clusters on the underside of leaves. The duration of the life cycle is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and relative humidity, enabling multiple generations to overlap during the growing season.

Damage and harmfulness. Both adults and nymphs feed by piercing plant tissues with their stylets to suck out sap. This feeding activity causes localized wilting, tissue necrosis, and yellowing. The most severe damage occurs when the insects feed on flower buds, pods, and developing seeds, leading to flower abortion, pod deformation, and a substantial reduction in both yield quantity and quality.

Protection measures. Effective management of Brachyplatys requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Frequent field scouting to detect early infestations during the flowering stage.
• Sanitation practices, including the removal of weeds that host the pest.
• Judicious use of chemical insecticides when population levels exceed economic injury thresholds.
• Implementation of crop rotation to reduce the overwintering potential of the pest in the field.
