Systematic position: The black-vented shield bug (Brachyplatys nigriventris) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Plataspidae. These insects are characterized by a broad, rounded, and flattened shape, often exhibiting a dark, shiny appearance. They are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural regions, particularly due to their invasive potential.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets leguminous crops. It causes substantial economic damage to soybean, common bean, and mung bean fields. By feeding on the sap of these plants, the bugs can quickly infest large areas, spreading from wild vegetation to commercial monocultures during the peak growing season.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid in distinct rows on the underside of host leaves. Nymphs often aggregate in large numbers, making them vulnerable to scouting but also capable of causing rapid localized damage. The pest thrives in warm, humid conditions, which favor rapid reproduction cycles.

Damage and harmfulness: The bugs use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on stems, leaves, and developing pods. Feeding results in chlorosis, stunting, and poor pod filling, often leading to reduced seed weight and quality. Furthermore, the feeding sites provide entry points for secondary pathogens, further compromising the health and vitality of the affected plants.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for mitigating the risks associated with this shield bug:
