Taxonomic position. Brachyplatys subaeneus is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Plataspidae. These insects are easily recognized by their distinct, rounded, and flattened appearance, which allows them to occupy narrow spaces on host plants effectively.

Host crops. This pest primarily targets leguminous plants. It is particularly noted for causing significant economic damage to soybean, bean, and pea crops. Furthermore, it often persists on various wild legumes, making it a difficult pest to eradicate from agricultural landscapes.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The female lays its eggs in distinct rows on the underside of leaves. The duration of the life cycle is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and humidity, allowing for multiple overlapping generations in tropical and subtropical regions.

Damage patterns and economic impact. Both nymphs and adults feed by inserting their stylets into the vascular tissue of the host plant. They target leaves, stems, and pods, extracting plant sap. The damage leads to wilting, stunted growth, pod abortion, and significant reduction in seed yield and quality.

Management strategies. Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

• Crop rotation to break the life cycle.
• Sanitation by removing weed hosts from field margins.
• Monitoring pest populations using visual counts or sweep nets.
