Globular stink bug

Systematic position: The species Coptosoma atomarium belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Plataspidae. These insects are easily recognized by their distinct globular, hemispherical body shape, which sets them apart from most other shield bugs commonly found in agricultural fields.

Affected crops: This pest primarily targets plants within the Fabaceae (legume) family. Soybeans, beans, peas, and various wild leguminous weeds serve as major hosts. The bug typically aggregates on these plants during the active growth stages, leading to significant colonization.

Biology and life cycle: Like other true bugs, Coptosoma atomarium undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the underside of foliage. The nymphs pass through five instars while feeding on plant sap. Adults usually overwinter in sheltered locations, such as leaf litter or crop residues, and emerge in the spring to start a new generation.

Nature of damage and pest status: Both nymphs and adults utilize piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on stems, leaves, and developing seed pods. This feeding action disrupts nutrient transport and introduces toxic saliva into the plant tissues. Severe infestations result in stunted growth, pod abortion, and reduced seed quality, ultimately leading to substantial yield losses if not managed.

Control measures: Management of Coptosoma atomarium relies on an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, destruction of alternative weed hosts, and tillage to disturb overwintering sites are critical. When population levels exceed the economic threshold, targeted insecticide applications, particularly systemic or contact-based chemicals, are applied to mitigate damage during the reproductive phases of the crop.
