Systematic position: The giant cricket (Brachytrupes portentosus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Gryllidae. This large insect species is widely recognized as a significant agricultural pest in Southeast Asia, known for its ability to cause extensive damage to crops while maintaining a predominantly fossorial (burrowing) lifestyle.

Biology and life cycle: Adult specimens typically reach 4 to 5 cm in length and are equipped with robust, powerful mandibles. Their life cycle comprises three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. These crickets inhabit deep, intricate burrows that can extend up to 100 cm into the soil. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging from their shelters at night to feed on nearby vegetation and find mates, which makes them difficult to monitor during daylight hours.

Affected crops: As a polyphagous insect, the giant cricket feeds on a diverse range of crops. It is particularly destructive to young seedlings of rice, maize, peanuts, tobacco, and various horticultural vegetables. They are highly attracted to tender, green plant tissues, making newly emerged or recently transplanted crops especially vulnerable to their feeding habits.

Type of damage and economic importance: The damage is caused by both adults and late-instar nymphs. They characteristically clip the base of the stems or feed on the root systems, often leading to total plant death. In cases of high infestation, the pest can devastate large areas of farmland, causing significant yield losses and necessitating expensive replanting processes for growers.

Control measures: Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies to address their underground activity. Recommended actions include:

  • Deep plowing of fields to disrupt burrows and destroy subterranean egg chambers.
  • Application of toxic baits near the entrances of active cricket tunnels.
