Rough stink bug

The genus Brochymena, commonly known as the rough stink bug, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. These insects are masters of camouflage, possessing a textured, grayish-brown body that allows them to blend perfectly into the bark of trees, making them exceptionally difficult to spot during routine garden inspections.

This pest species feeds on a wide range of plants, including various fruit and ornamental trees. Key host plants often include apple, pear, and peach trees, as well as various deciduous forest species. By targeting young shoots, developing fruits, and leaves, they can significantly impact both the health and aesthetic value of plants.

The life cycle of the rough stink bug follows incomplete metamorphosis. Females typically deposit their eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves or on tree trunks. The nymphs, which pass through five distinct instars, look similar to adults but are smaller. The winter is usually spent in the adult stage, sheltered under loose bark, in leaf litter, or in protected crevices of woody plants.

The damage caused by these insects is primarily due to their piercing-sucking mouthparts. As they feed, they inject enzymes into the plant tissue, causing the fruit to develop sunken, corky spots and necrotic areas. This feeding behavior not only ruins the fruit quality but can also lead to premature fruit drop and stunted growth of shoots, reducing overall yields for commercial and private growers.

Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Cultural control, such as maintaining a clean orchard floor and pruning damaged wood, helps eliminate overwintering sites. In cases of severe infestation, targeted insecticide applications may be necessary. Monitoring for adults early in the season is critical to preventing large-scale population outbreaks and minimizing potential crop losses.
