Rough stink bug

The Rough stink bug (Brochymena annulata) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Pentatomidae family. Known for its remarkable camouflage, this insect closely resembles tree bark, which allows it to thrive on various woody plants. It is widely recognized in North American horticulture for its ability to blend into the environment, making it a challenging pest to detect early in the growing season.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including various deciduous trees, shrubs, and ornamental species. By inserting its piercing-sucking mouthparts into plant tissues, the bug feeds on the sap of young stems, leaves, and developing fruits. While some species within this genus exhibit predatory behavior toward other insects, the Rough stink bug can become a significant nuisance in agricultural settings when it switches to plant feeding.

The life cycle follows a standard hemimetabolous pattern: egg, five nymphal instars, and adult. Females typically deposit their eggs in clusters on leaf surfaces or bark. Overwintering occurs primarily in the adult stage, where they seek shelter in protected areas like crevices in tree bark or under thick layers of leaf litter.

Damage caused by this insect involves localized necrosis, distorted growth patterns, and the premature shedding of fruit or buds. The feeding activity introduces salivary enzymes into the plant, causing tissue damage and potentially creating entry points for opportunistic plant pathogens. In severe infestations, the cumulative stress on the tree can result in stunted growth and a considerable reduction in both quantity and quality of the yield.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for controlling the Rough stink bug include:
