Bean seed beetle

Systematic position. The bean seed beetle (Bruchidius ptilinoides) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchididae. It is a well-known pest that specializes in developing within the seeds of leguminous plants, causing severe damage in both agricultural fields and post-harvest storage facilities.

Crops damaged. This pest primarily targets seeds of various legumes, including beans, lentils, chickpeas, and several ornamental leguminous species. It is capable of infesting seeds both during the ripening phase in the field and within stored grain batches, making it a persistent challenge for farmers and grain storage managers alike.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs on the surface of seed pods or individual seeds. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the seed coat, feeding on the internal tissues until they reach the pupal stage. The duration of the cycle is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and humidity, with faster development occurring in warmer conditions.

Damage patterns and harmfulness. Larvae consume the internal portion of the seed, leaving only the outer shell intact. The primary economic impact is the complete loss of germination potential in seeds and a significant reduction in the weight and nutritional quality of stored grain. Infested seeds can be easily identified by the presence of small, circular exit holes where adults emerged.

Control measures. Protecting crops against Bruchidius ptilinoides requires an integrated approach. Recommended strategies include:

• Regular sanitation and cleaning of storage areas.
• Fumigation of grain shipments in airtight containers.
• Deep plowing to reduce overwintering populations in fields.
• Using pheromone traps for monitoring and early detection.
• Maintaining low temperatures in storage to slow down larval development.
