Description
The Cercis seed beetle (Bruchidius siliquastri) belongs to the family Bruchidae within the order Coleoptera. This species is a specialized insect that predominantly infests the seeds of the Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum), posing a significant threat to its propagation.
The primary host plant is the European redbud or Judas tree. The larvae of this beetle develop exclusively inside the seeds, consuming the endosperm and embryo, which results in the total loss of seed viability and vitality for the host plant.
The biological cycle is strictly synchronized with the host plant's phenology. Adults emerge in spring, coinciding with the flowering and seed-pod formation stages. The females deposit their eggs on the surfaces of young pods; subsequently, the hatched larvae bore through the pod wall and penetrate the seeds to complete their larval and pupal development inside.
Damage is characterized by circular emergence holes found on the seeds. This pest causes severe economic losses in ornamental nurseries, as the infestation renders the seeds useless for sowing and can lead to a significant decline in the successful cultivation of redbud trees in urban landscapes.
