Description

The clover seed beetle (Bruchidius trifolii) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. This beetle species is specialized in targeting the seeds of leguminous plants, particularly various types of clover, causing considerable economic damage to seed production farms globally.

The primary host plants for this pest are members of the Trifolium genus. Larval activity is restricted to the developing seeds within the pod. When the infestation level is high, the pest can consume a major portion of the seed crop, drastically reducing both the yield and the viability of the harvested seed material.

The biological cycle is well-synchronized with the flowering and seed-setting phases of the clover crop. Adult beetles feed on flower pollen and nectar. Eggs are deposited on the surface of young pods. Once hatched, the larvae bore through the pod wall and penetrate the seed, where they consume the inner contents until pupation occurs inside the seed coat.

The characteristic damage caused by the clover seed beetle involves the total destruction of the endosperm and the embryo. Upon reaching the adult stage, the insect emerges through a clean circular hole drilled through the testa. These perforated seeds are lighter, possess low germination rates, and are often discarded during the cleaning process.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Cultural practices, such as early harvesting, can help minimize seed loss before the beetles emerge. Chemical control should be timed carefully to protect the seed crop during the budding stage, while also implementing safety protocols to protect essential pollinators such as bees.
