Systematic position: Bruchidius unicolor is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. These insects are well-known pests characterized by their specialized ability to colonize and consume the seeds of various leguminous plants, often causing economic losses in both commercial and forage crops.

Crops damaged: The pest targets a range of leguminous plants, particularly species within the Astragalus and Lathyrus genera. Its presence is most noted in fields where perennial legumes are cultivated for seed, as the prolonged vegetation period provides stable conditions for the beetle's life cycle.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Bruchidius unicolor is strictly synchronized with the flowering and seed-setting phases of host plants. Adults feed on pollen before mating. Females deposit eggs directly onto the surface of developing seed pods. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the seeds, where they feed on the endosperm and embryo, completing their development before pupating inside the seed cavity.

Character of damage and economic importance: The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which hollow out the seeds, rendering them sterile and non-viable.
