Alfalfa seed beetle

The Alfalfa seed beetle (Bruchidius varius) is a member of the family Bruchidae (seed beetles) within the order Coleoptera. This species is primarily recognized as a significant pest affecting the seed production of leguminous plants, particularly alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Adult beetles are relatively small, typically measuring 2–3 mm in length, and are easily identified by their specific coloration and hairy appearance.

The primary damage caused by this insect occurs during the larval stage. Larvae develop exclusively inside the seeds, consuming the embryo and endosperm. This feeding behavior directly reduces the yield and severely impairs the viability of the seeds intended for future planting. In severe infestations, the quality of the harvested crop can be completely compromised.

The biological cycle begins in the spring when overwintering adults emerge and migrate to blooming alfalfa fields. After mating, females deposit eggs on the surface of developing pods. Upon hatching, the young larvae bore into the seeds to complete their development. The entire process from egg to adult takes place within the seed pod, making the pest difficult to reach once the larvae have entered the seeds.

The presence of Bruchidius varius is often detected after the pods have matured and dried. A clear indicator of an infestation is the emergence of circular holes in the seed coat, which are created by adults as they leave the seed. These seeds often show reduced weight and are highly susceptible to colonization by secondary molds and fungi.

Integrated management of the Alfalfa seed beetle includes:

• Implementing early harvest strategies to collect seeds before the adults exit the pods.
• Post-harvest tillage to bury infested debris and reduce winter survival rates.
• Applying insecticides during the budding stage to eliminate adults before egg-laying.
• Strict quarantine and inspection of seed lots to prevent the spread of the pest in stored materials.
