Pea weevil

The pea weevil (Bruchus brachialis) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. It is a highly specialized insect that primarily targets pea crops, causing substantial losses in both seed weight and agricultural value throughout major cultivation regions.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which develop inside the pea seeds. During the larval stage, the insect consumes the endosperm and the embryo, effectively destroying the viability of the seed. This renders the crop unsuitable for sowing and significantly degrades its nutritional and commercial quality for food consumption.

The biological development of this pest is closely tied to the host plant's phenology. Adults typically emerge and feed on pollen during the flowering stage of peas. Following mating, females deposit their eggs on the surface of developing pods. Upon hatching, the larvae bore through the pod wall and enter the seeds to complete their life cycle.

A distinctive symptom of Bruchus brachialis infestation is the presence of small, circular holes on the surface of the peas. These holes occur when the adult beetle exits the seed after metamorphosis. Infested seeds suffer from significant mass loss and are highly susceptible to secondary contamination by molds and various pathogens.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential to mitigate the impact of the pea weevil:

• Ensuring the use of certified, weevil-free seeds for planting.
• Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the pest's reproductive cycle.
• Scheduling early harvesting to prevent the adult beetles from emerging and infesting new areas.
• Applying chemical control (insecticides) specifically during the bloom period to target adults before egg-laying begins.
• Conducting professional fumigation of grain storage facilities if infestations are detected.
