Description
The lentil seed beetle (Bruchus lentis) is a significant coleopteran pest belonging to the Bruchidae family. It is considered one of the most destructive insects for lentil crops globally, causing severe damage to seed quality and field productivity.
This beetle is a monophagous pest, meaning it attacks only lentil plants. Adult beetles lay eggs on the surface of developing pods. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the pod walls and enter the seeds, where they complete their larval and pupal stages, feeding entirely on the interior contents of the seed.
The biological cycle is strictly synchronized with the flowering and pod formation stages of the host plant. The adults overwinter in sheltered locations, including crop residues and storage facilities. During the spring, they migrate to blooming lentil fields to feed on pollen before depositing eggs. One generation per year is typically observed in the temperate climate zones.
The damage caused by Bruchus lentis is primarily internal. Larvae consume the embryo and endosperm, significantly reducing seed weight, viability, and market value. The most visible sign of infestation is the round exit holes made by emerging adults, which render the lentils unsuitable for human consumption or high-quality seed production.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to lower pest pressure:
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host plants to break the cycle.
- Early harvesting to prevent beetles from emerging and re-infesting in the field.
- Targeted insecticide applications during the flowering stage before eggs are laid.
- Post-harvest fumigation of grain storage facilities to kill overwintering beetles.
- Use of resistant lentil cultivars where available.
