Broadbean weevil

Systematic position: The broadbean weevil (Bruchus rufimanus) is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Bruchidae. It is recognized globally as a serious pest of leguminous crops, capable of causing significant economic losses by damaging seeds during both the field development and storage stages.

Affected crops: The primary host plant for this species is the broad bean (Vicia faba). However, the pest is also known to attack other pulse crops, including field peas, depending on the availability of hosts and environmental conditions in the cropping area.

Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. Adult weevils overwinter either inside seeds or in protected areas like field debris and storage facilities. In the spring, they migrate to blooming legume fields. After mating, females deposit eggs on the surface of developing pods, and the newly emerged larvae bore directly into the seeds to feed.

Damage and pest status: The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which hollow out the seeds to feed on the embryo and nutrients. This activity severely compromises the seed's viability, drastically reducing germination rates. Furthermore, the presence of larvae and their waste products makes the produce unsuitable for human consumption or commercial trade.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management is essential to minimize the broadbean weevil population density.
