European green toad

The European green toad (lat. Bufo viridis) is an anuran amphibian belonging to the Bufonidae family. While these toads are primarily insectivores and highly beneficial for controlling populations of garden pests such as slugs, beetles, and caterpillars, they can sometimes cause unintended physical damage to greenhouse plants and seedlings in intensive agricultural settings.

From an agronomic perspective, the European green toad is not a pest in the traditional sense, as it does not consume plant matter. However, its presence in nurseries and greenhouses can be disruptive. Large individuals navigating through seedbeds or containerized plants can inadvertently crush young sprouts, dislodge soil around roots, or cause mechanical damage to delicate stems during their nightly foraging activities.

The life cycle of Bufo viridis is semi-aquatic. Breeding occurs in ponds during the spring, after which the toads move to terrestrial environments. They prefer damp, cool locations for daytime shelter, frequently hiding under mulch, agricultural fabrics, or near moist soil pockets. These preferences often bring them into close proximity with high-value crops or seedling production areas.

The damage caused by these amphibians is strictly mechanical. In a greenhouse environment, the main issue is the physical trampling of young shoots and the disturbance of potting soil. This can lead to decreased plant survival rates in the initial growth stages. Furthermore, their presence in high-density production areas can sometimes interfere with irrigation systems or automated monitoring equipment.

Management strategies should focus on exclusion rather than eradication. Because these toads provide significant natural pest control services by eating harmful insects, their presence is generally encouraged in open fields. In greenhouses, use fine-mesh screening on ventilation openings and remove potential daytime resting spots like piles of debris, loose mulch near entrances, or unnecessary covers to discourage the toads from entering crop production zones.
