Cypress buprestid

The cypress buprestid (Buprestis cupressi) is a destructive wood-boring beetle belonging to the Buprestidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is a specialized pest that targets cypress species and other related conifers, often causing significant damage to ornamental gardens and natural forested areas.

The primary hosts for this insect are trees in the Cupressaceae family. While adult beetles may feed on needles and tender shoots, the larval stage is the most damaging. Larvae tunnel extensively beneath the bark and into the wood, effectively girdling the tree by destroying the cambium layer responsible for nutrient transport.

The biology of Buprestis cupressi involves a complex life cycle often spanning multiple years. Adult females typically oviposit in bark crevices, targeting trees that are already suffering from drought, mechanical damage, or environmental stress. Once the larvae hatch, they begin their internal feeding, which creates characteristic galleries that weaken the structural integrity of the tree.

Damage symptoms include the gradual wilting of branches, yellowing or bronzing of the foliage, and the presence of small, D-shaped exit holes in the bark. Often, the presence of these beetles is discovered only when the tree shows advanced signs of decline. Severe infestations can lead to total tree death, especially during prolonged periods of drought.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to maintain tree health and reduce pest populations. Recommended strategies include:

• Prompt removal and destruction of infested wood to limit the spread of beetles.
• Ensuring proper irrigation and fertilization to keep trees vigorous and less attractive to pests.
• Applying systemic insecticides during the peak flight season of adult beetles.
