The Antillean cockroach (Byrsotria fumigata) is a species of cockroach in the family Blaberidae. Originally native to the Caribbean region, it has become a notorious pest in greenhouses and botanical gardens worldwide. Due to its cryptic habits and ability to survive in various environments, it poses a significant threat to delicate greenhouse cultures.

Adult Antillean cockroaches are medium-sized insects with a dark, robust appearance. The males possess functional wings, allowing them to fly in search of mates, while the females are largely flightless. Their nocturnal behavior makes them particularly difficult to manage, as they spend daylight hours buried in soil, leaf litter, or deep within dense foliage.

The biology of Byrsotria fumigata is characterized by ovoviviparity. The female carries the ootheca internally until the nymphs are ready to emerge, which provides offspring with significant protection from environmental stressors. This reproductive strategy contributes to the stability of their populations in artificial indoor ecosystems where temperatures are kept consistently warm.

Regarding their impact on agriculture, these insects act as generalist feeders. They consume seedlings, young succulent stems, and soft leaf tissues, often causing extensive structural damage to plants. Besides direct herbivory, their movement through the soil and over leaf surfaces contributes to the cross-contamination of plants with various fungal spores and opportunistic pathogens.

Management strategies for this pest require a multi-faceted approach. Sanitation is the first line of defense: removing decaying plant matter and excess mulch significantly reduces their harborage sites. Chemical control involves the use of targeted insecticide baits, while physical control includes the regular inspection of incoming plant shipments to prevent the introduction of new populations.
