Description

The genus Caenorhabditis belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Rhabditida, and family Rhabditidae. While primarily recognized as a model organism in biological research, some species within this group are found in agricultural environments where they interact with decaying organic matter and moisture-stressed plants.

These nematodes thrive in soils with high organic matter content, compost piles, and environments with excessive humidity. While their primary diet consists of bacteria, they can colonize necrotic or damaged tissues of crops, often acting as secondary pests that accelerate the decay process of infected plant parts.

The biology of Caenorhabditis is characterized by a very rapid life cycle. Under optimal conditions of 20–25°C, they can complete their development from egg to adult in just a few days. This high reproductive rate allows populations to explode quickly when suitable moisture and bacterial food sources are abundant.

Their impact on agriculture is mostly associated with the acceleration of rot and degradation in plant roots and stems, particularly in seedlings. By feeding on the microorganisms involved in plant decay, they contribute to the loss of tissue integrity, leading to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and susceptibility to secondary pathogens.

Effective management strategies focus on cultural practices:

  • Optimizing soil drainage to prevent waterlogging.
  • Proper sanitation and removal of decaying plant debris from fields.
  • Implementation of crop rotation to break environmental cycles.
  • Application of biological control agents such as nematode-trapping fungi.
These measures create an environment less favorable for population surges while maintaining overall soil health and crop resilience.
