Diploscapter coronatus is a microscopic nematode species belonging to the order Rhabditida and the family Rhabditidae. While often considered a soil-dwelling, free-living organism, this species exhibits facultative parasitic behavior, often associating with plant root systems and contributing to the decline of various plant species under stress.
The nematode primarily targets vegetable crops and ornamental plants. It is particularly problematic in greenhouse environments and nurseries, where consistently high soil moisture and warm temperatures provide optimal conditions for the nematode to multiply and infest the roots of vulnerable, young plants.
The biology of Diploscapter coronatus is notable for its ability to reproduce parthenogenetically, which allows for rapid colonization of the substrate. The life cycle consists of several larval stages that can inhabit both the soil and the plant tissues. In adverse environmental conditions, the nematode can enter a specialized survival state known as the dauer stage, allowing it to withstand desiccation.
