Description

Rhabditis is a genus of free-living nematodes belonging to the order Rhabditida, family Rhabditidae. While the majority of these organisms are soil-dwelling saprotrophs, some species are recognized as facultative parasites that can invade plant tissues, particularly when those tissues are already compromised by decay or anaerobic conditions.

These nematodes primarily target vegetables such as potatoes, onions, carrots, and various bulbous ornamental plants. They are frequently found in soils with high organic matter content and poor drainage, where the environment facilitates the breakdown of plant matter, thereby creating optimal conditions for nematode colonization.

The life cycle of Rhabditis is characterized by rapid development and high reproductive capacity. Under favorable conditions, the population can explode in a short time. When conditions become harsh—such as depletion of food sources or drying soil—they enter a stage called a dauer larva, which is highly resistant to environmental stressors and serves as the primary dispersal and survival form.

The damage caused by these pests involves the acceleration of rot and tissue degradation in roots, tubers, and bulbs. By feeding on the decaying tissues and potentially introducing secondary bacteria, Rhabditis hinders root system development, causes wilting, and often renders harvested crops unsuitable for long-term storage due to rapid post-harvest rot.

Management and protection strategies focus on cultural and physical practices rather than direct chemical intervention. Key measures include improving soil drainage to prevent hypoxia, avoiding the over-application of raw manure, and ensuring proper rotation of susceptible crops. Maintaining healthy soil structure and removing crop residues are critical steps in reducing nematode population density.
