Description
Systematic position: The genus Calepitrimerus belongs to the Eriophyidae family, within the superfamily Eriophyoidea. These are commonly known as four-legged or gall mites. Unlike typical spider mites, they are extremely small and possess a vermiform body structure, making them difficult to detect without specialized equipment.
Host crops: These mites are highly host-specific. The most economically significant species, such as Calepitrimerus vitis, primarily affects grapevines. Other species within the genus are major pests of solanaceous crops like tomatoes and peppers, as well as certain species of conifers, where they colonize needles and foliage.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg stage, two nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Adult females overwinter in protected areas of the plant, such as beneath bud scales or within cracks in the bark. In spring, they emerge and migrate to newly developing leaves to begin their feeding and reproduction cycles, which can overlap throughout the warm season.
Nature of damage and pest impact: Feeding by these mites results in severe cellular damage due to the injection of saliva containing enzymes. This causes the characteristic chlorosis, stunted growth, and a brownish, "rusty" appearance of the leaves. In severe infestations, the foliage may curl, turn brittle, and drop prematurely, which significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity and yield potential of the plant.
Control measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach that includes:
- Monitoring and scouting during the early growth stages.
- Application of specific acaricides during the pre-bloom or early leaf development period.
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant parts to reduce the inoculum.
- Implementing cultural practices that ensure good airflow within the canopy to create unfavorable conditions for mite proliferation.
