Bean weevil

Callosobruchus ademptus

Description

The bean weevil (Callosobruchus ademptus) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. It is a highly specialized species that primarily targets the seeds of various legume crops. Due to its ability to complete its life cycle within harvested seeds, it is a major concern for global grain trade and long-term storage facilities.

This pest is primarily associated with the infestation of beans (Phaseolus spp.). The adult beetles are relatively small, yet they possess a high capacity for reproduction. When uncontrolled, the population can increase rapidly, leading to substantial economic losses in both agricultural production and grain warehousing systems.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid on the surface of the beans. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the seed, feeding on the endosperm and developing within the protective seed coat. Once the development is complete, the adult beetles chew their way out of the seed, creating the characteristic emergence holes.

The damage caused by these insects is both quantitative and qualitative. The internal feeding destroys the embryo and the starch reserves of the seed, rendering it useless for planting. Furthermore, infested beans become contaminated with larval excrement, which reduces their nutritional value and safety for human consumption or animal feed.

Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key control methods include the following:

  • Drying harvested beans to moisture levels below 12% to restrict development.
  • Utilizing controlled atmosphere storage or cold temperatures to kill larvae.
  • Applying approved fumigants to disinfect grain lots in silos.
  • Implementing rigorous hygiene practices in warehouses to remove breeding sources.
  • Monitoring with pheromone or light traps to detect adult presence early.
