Description
The four-spotted bean weevil (Callosobruchus analis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. It is a significant pest of stored products, primarily targeting the seeds of leguminous crops held in warehouses, grain elevators, and private storage facilities.
The pest primarily infests various pulse crops, including mung beans, lentils, chickpeas, soybeans, and common beans. Due to its high reproductive potential, it can cause severe economic losses in stored commodities, rendering the seeds completely unmarketable and unsuitable for germination.
The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs directly on the seed coat. Upon hatching, the larva bores into the bean, consuming the interior. The entire development from egg to adult takes place inside the seed, with the adult finally exiting through a characteristic round hole, completing the life cycle in about 3–5 weeks under warm conditions.
Infestation damage includes significant weight loss of the grain, depletion of nutrient content, and contamination with frass. The presence of exit holes is the most reliable indicator of an infestation. Beyond the physical loss, the nutritional and commercial value of the legume batch is destroyed, and infested batches are often rejected for international trade.
Effective management requires a combination of preventive and curative practices. Essential control measures include:
- Maintaining dry and cool storage conditions.
- Regular sanitation of warehouse floors and equipment to remove residual grain.
- The use of airtight packaging for small quantities.
- Chemical fumigation of large storage volumes to eliminate all life stages.
