Four-spotted bean weevil

The four-spotted bean weevil (scientific name Callosobruchus dorsalis) is a destructive pest of stored pulses, belonging to the family Bruchidae within the order Coleoptera. It is a cosmopolitan species known for causing significant economic losses to various legumes during post-harvest storage and distribution.

The primary hosts of this pest include mung beans, cowpeas, chickpeas, lentils, and common beans. Infestations often begin in the field just before harvest, but the pest thrives and multiplies rapidly within stored grain, where it can complete multiple generations in a single season given favorable temperature and moisture conditions.

The life cycle of this weevil is closely tied to its host. Females lay eggs on the surface of the beans, and upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the seed. The larva develops entirely inside the seed, consuming the cotyledon and the embryo. After pupation, the adult beetle chews an emergence hole, which is the diagnostic circular exit mark visible on the outer shell of the infested bean.

The damage caused by the four-spotted bean weevil is severe, as it renders seeds useless for both human consumption and planting. The consumption of the seed embryo reduces germination potential to near zero, while the extensive tunneling inside the grain leads to substantial weight loss and reduction in nutritional quality. Furthermore, the presence of these insects can lead to the heating of grain piles, promoting mold growth.

Effective management strategies for this pest include:

• Sanitation of storage facilities and warehouses to remove residues of previous crops.
• Fumigation of infested grain stocks using approved chemical agents to eliminate internal infestations.
• Cold storage protocols, as lower temperatures inhibit the reproductive rate and development of the weevil.
• Monitoring with pheromone traps and inspecting stored goods for emergence holes regularly.
