Smooth cowpea weevil

The smooth cowpea weevil (Callosobruchus glaber) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Bruchidae family. It is a notorious stored-product pest that primarily targets leguminous seeds, causing significant economic damage both in agricultural fields before harvest and within storage facilities.

This pest mainly feeds on the seeds of various legumes, including beans, peas, and lentils. The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which bore into the seed and consume the internal contents, leaving only the outer seed coat. This destruction renders the seeds useless for human consumption and eliminates their germination potential.

The biological cycle of this weevil is highly dependent on ambient temperature. A female lays eggs on the surface of the seeds, securing them with a protective secretion. Upon hatching, the larva burrows directly into the seed, where it undergoes all developmental stages and eventually pupates. In heated storage environments, the pest can complete multiple generations per year.

A definitive sign of an infestation is the emergence of circular exit holes on the seeds. Beyond the physical consumption of the grain, the infestation results in contamination by larval excrement and cast skins, which significantly degrades the quality and safety of the stored pulse products.
