Description

The Cowpea weevil (Callosobruchus maculatus) is a destructive pest of stored products, belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. This beetle is globally recognized for its ability to cause severe economic losses in legume cultivation and, most significantly, during the storage phase of agricultural production.

The primary hosts for this pest include a wide range of legumes, such as cowpeas, mung beans, chickpeas, lentils, and peas. When infesting crops, the insect feeds on the internal tissues of the seeds, effectively destroying the embryo and reducing the nutritional and commercial value of the grain. This makes it a major concern for both farmers and seed distributors.

The biological cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female lays eggs directly on the surface of the beans. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the seed, where they undergo their entire development process. The speed of the life cycle is heavily dependent on ambient temperature and humidity, with optimal conditions allowing for rapid generation turnover in just a few weeks.

Typical damage is manifested by the emergence of exit holes in the seeds created by adult beetles. Infested batches of grain are easily identified by these circular holes and the presence of fine dust resulting from larval feeding. Beyond physical loss, the infestation leads to reduced germination rates and susceptibility to secondary fungal infections, rendering the product unmarketable.
