Adzuki bean weevil

Callosobruchus ornatus

Description

The Adzuki bean weevil (Callosobruchus ornatus) is a significant pest belonging to the family Bruchidae within the order Coleoptera. This insect is widely recognized as a serious threat to stored legumes, capable of causing substantial economic losses in both warehouse environments and field crops in warmer climates.

The primary hosts of this pest include a variety of leguminous crops. It particularly favors seeds of adzuki beans, mung beans, chickpeas, and cowpeas. These crops are often heavily infested when stored in bulk, leading to a rapid reduction in the quality and quantity of the agricultural produce.

The life cycle of the weevil involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females deposit eggs directly onto the surface of the beans. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the seeds, consuming the internal content. They complete their development and pupate inside the seed, eventually emerging as adults by cutting out characteristic circular exit holes.

This beetle is highly reproductive and can complete multiple generations in a single year under favorable temperature and humidity conditions in storage facilities. Infested seeds lose their nutritional value, weight, and viability. Furthermore, the presence of larval frass and associated fungal growth makes the commodity unfit for human or animal consumption.

To effectively manage and prevent infestations of the Adzuki bean weevil, professional agricultural practices are required:

  • Maintaining rigorous sanitation standards in grain storage facilities.
  • Implementing proper moisture and temperature control to disrupt the insect's life cycle.
  • Utilizing fumigation methods in closed environments to eradicate existing populations.
  • Applying certified protective treatments to seeds intended for long-term storage or sowing.
