Description

Taxonomy: The Rhodesian bean weevil (Callosobruchus rhodesianus) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Bruchidae family. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that thrives in stored legume products, particularly in warmer climates, where it can cause extensive damage to international trade supplies.

Host plants: This beetle primarily targets the seeds of various pulse crops. It is most commonly associated with stored beans, lentils, chickpeas, and cowpeas. The larvae feed internally on the seeds, consuming the nutritional content which results in the complete destruction of the embryonic development and food quality.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the surface of the beans. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the seed coat. The entire larval and pupal stages are completed inside the seed, and the adult eventually emerges by cutting a distinct circular hole through the surface.

Nature of damage: The damage is characterized by significant weight loss of the stored product and a decrease in germination viability. Infested lots are easily identifiable by the presence of numerous emergence holes. Furthermore, the buildup of frass and larval remains makes the grain unsuitable for human consumption or processing.

Control measures: Management of Callosobruchus rhodesianus relies on strict sanitary protocols during storage and transport. Essential strategies include:

  • Fumigation of storage facilities with authorized insecticides.
  • Maintaining low moisture content in the seeds.
  • Storage at temperatures below 12°C to inhibit insect activity.
  • Routine inspection and cleaning of all warehouses to remove residual infested grain.
