Systematic position: Camponotus chromaiodes belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. These ants are known as carpenter ants because of their habit of nesting in wooden structures and living trees, where they excavate galleries to expand their colony.

Host plants: This species primarily targets deciduous trees, showing a preference for damaged, decaying, or hollowed-out wood. In agricultural settings, they are often found in mature fruit orchards where trees exhibit signs of rot, providing an ideal environment for the ant's nest construction.

Biology and life cycle: Like other members of the genus, Camponotus chromaiodes colonies are highly organized. The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. During the swarming season, winged reproductive individuals leave the nest to mate and establish new colonies, often selecting damp wood or existing tree cavities as their base for expansion.

Damage characteristics and economic impact: The damage is primarily structural. While they do not consume wood as a primary food source, the excavation of long, winding galleries inside the trunk severely disrupts the tree's vascular system. This leads to reduced nutrient transport, weakened structural integrity, and increased vulnerability to secondary infections from pathogens and other pests.

Protection measures: Management of these pests requires a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Recommended practices include:

• Eliminating moisture sources and decaying organic matter such as stumps and deadwood near the orchard.
• Direct application of residual insecticides into identified nest galleries.
• Using bait systems that workers carry back to the queen to suppress the entire colony.
• Applying sticky barriers to tree trunks to prevent foraging ants from accessing the canopy.
