Camponotus conspicuus is a species of ant within the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. Known as carpenter ants, these insects are significant pests that specialize in nesting within wood. Unlike termites that consume wood as food, these ants excavate galleries strictly for housing and colony expansion, posing a serious threat to various plant species.

This species frequently attacks tropical and subtropical fruit trees, including citrus, cacao, and coffee plants. They often target weakened trees or those with pre-existing wounds, using these entry points to infiltrate the trunk and major branches. The presence of these ants is often overlooked until structural damage to the tree becomes apparent.

The biology of Camponotus conspicuus revolves around a sophisticated colony structure, where the queen directs the growth of workers. The development stages include eggs, larvae, and pupae, with workers maintaining the nest and foraging for food. They are particularly active during warmer seasons when the expansion of internal tunnels is at its peak.

The damage caused by these ants is primarily mechanical and cumulative. By creating complex networks of tunnels, they hollow out the woody tissue, which significantly weakens the tree's structural integrity. This damage not only hampers the flow of nutrients and water but also creates entry points for harmful fungi and bacteria, leading to wood decay and tree decline.
