The Florida carpenter ant (Camponotus floridanus) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Formicidae family. While these ants are widely recognized for their structural damage in buildings, they also act as significant pests in agricultural settings by nesting in and damaging the wood of trees and woody shrubs.
The species primarily targets trees with pre-existing wounds or decaying heartwood. In an agricultural environment, they are frequently found colonizing citrus groves and ornamental orchards. Their presence indicates a deeper structural vulnerability in the host plant that needs immediate intervention.
The biology of Camponotus floridanus involves a polymorphic colony structure with a high level of social organization. They do not eat wood but excavate it to create nesting galleries.
