Description

Systematic position. The Herculean carpenter ant (Camponotus herculeanus) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. It is one of the largest ant species in its range and is widely recognized for its ability to excavate galleries within wooden structures and living trees.

Host plants. While these ants are naturally found in forest ecosystems, they frequently attack fruit orchards and timber trees. They are particularly drawn to decaying heartwood in mature apple, pear, and various coniferous trees, often colonizing specimens that have existing health or physical impairments.

Biology and development. The colony cycle begins with a queen establishing a nest, often in damp or rotting wood. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Colonies are long-lived and can grow to include several thousand workers, which are extremely active during the warmer months.

Type of damage and severity. Carpenter ants do not eat wood for food; rather, they carve out extensive tunnels to create galleries for nesting. This excavating activity compromises the structural integrity of the tree, disrupts the translocation of nutrients, and creates entry points for moisture, bacteria, and wood-decaying fungi.

  • Remove stumps and decaying wood near the orchard.
  • Maintain tree health to prevent initial wood decay.
  • Seal any cracks or mechanical wounds on the tree bark.
  • Use systemic insecticides or bait stations to target the foraging workers.
  • Implement trunk barriers to prevent ants from ascending and establishing satellite nests.
