The Pennsylvania Carpenter Ant (Camponotus pennsylvanicus) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Formicidae family. Recognized as one of the largest ant species in its range, these insects are notorious for their ability to hollow out wood to create galleries for their nesting sites, posing a risk to both ornamental and fruit-bearing trees.
These ants typically target moist, decaying wood but may extend their tunnels into healthy heartwood once the colony is well-established. Common host plants include various hardwood trees like maples, oaks, and fruit trees such as apple or cherry, where structural integrity can be compromised over time due to the excavation activities of the colony.
The biology of this species is complex, involving a distinct caste system with a queen, larvae, pupae, and sterile workers. The colony expansion is slow but steady, and once a tree is chosen as a central nesting point, the ants will aggressively defend their territory and explore the surrounding area for food sources, including insects and honeydew.
The damage caused by these ants is primarily mechanical. By excavating complex systems of galleries, they interfere with the tree's natural transport of water and nutrients. While they do not consume the wood, the physical space they create leaves the tree weakened and susceptible to secondary infections, storm damage, and potential total collapse of branches or the entire trunk.
