Punctured carpenter ant

Camponotus punctulatus belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. These ants are known for their habit of nesting in wooden structures and living plant tissues. While they are a natural part of various ecosystems, in agricultural environments, they act as significant pests by compromising the structural integrity of trees and facilitating the spread of various plant pathogens.

The ant species primarily targets fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and occasionally younger woody crops. By nesting inside the trunks or near the root zones of these plants, they cause significant physical damage. Such infestation weakens the plant, making it highly susceptible to fungal infections and rot, which ultimately reduces the plant's yield and vigor.

The biology of this species is centered around a hierarchical social structure. The queen oversees the reproduction of the colony, while workers maintain the nest and forage for food. They often exploit existing cavities in the wood but will actively enlarge them to accommodate the growing population. Their resilience and ability to establish satellite nests make them difficult to eradicate once a colony is well-established.

Damage caused by these ants is both direct and indirect. Directly, they excavate galleries within the tree, which can lead to structural failure of branches or the entire tree. Indirectly, they engage in a symbiotic relationship with aphids, protecting them from natural predators. This promotes aphid outbreaks, leading to sap loss, stunted growth, and the transmission of viral diseases across the plantation.

Management strategies for controlling these pests include several effective measures:

• Remove all rotting logs, stumps, and dead wood from the orchard vicinity to eliminate nesting sites.
• Apply specialized insecticide baits designed to target the entire colony, including the queen.
• Use sticky bands or physical barriers on the trunks of trees to block ant movement.
• Implement integrated pest management (IPM) to control aphid populations, thereby removing the food source that attracts the ants to the trees.
