The black carpenter ant (Camponotus vagus) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. These ants are among the largest in Europe, recognizable by their dense black hairs and robust body structure, often nesting in deadwood, stumps, or damaged trees within forests and orchards.
These insects are considered pests primarily because they excavate wood to expand their nests. While they rarely attack healthy, vigorous trees, they frequently infest trees with decay, heart rot, or structural wounds. Furthermore, they are known to damage wooden structures, including wooden poles, fences, and parts of garden buildings.
The biological cycle of Camponotus vagus centers around a long-lived queen and a colony that grows through the labor of workers. Their life cycle includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Additionally, their interaction with aphids, which they protect to collect honeydew, causes indirect harm by promoting the spread of various plant diseases and reducing tree vitality.
