Systematic position: The Mediterranean snail (Cantareus apertus) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and family Helicidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its ability to survive harsh dry conditions by burying itself in the soil, emerging only when environmental moisture levels become optimal for activity and reproduction.

Crops damaged: This species is a generalist feeder and causes severe economic damage to various crops. Key targets include leafy greens like lettuce, brassicas such as cabbage and cauliflower, tomatoes, and various legume species. In addition to vegetables, the snail can cause substantial damage to ornamental flowers and seedling beds, often consuming entire plant tissues in a single night.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is distinctly seasonal. The snails typically enter aestivation during the dry season, sealing their shell opening and retreating into the soil. With the onset of rainfall, they emerge to feed and mate. Females deposit eggs in clusters within the soil. The rapid development of the juveniles, coupled with high reproductive rates, allows populations to increase significantly within a single growing season.

Damage and severity: Snails cause damage by using their radula to rasp away plant tissue, resulting in large, irregular holes in leaves and stems. Extensive feeding often leads to the destruction of the plant's photosynthetic capacity. Furthermore, the secretion of mucus trails over the surface of edible produce reduces market value and promotes the secondary growth of molds and pathogenic fungi.
