Garden snail

Systematic position: The garden snail (Cryptomphalus aspersus, formerly Helix aspersa) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, order Stylommatophora, and family Helicidae. It is a highly adaptable terrestrial gastropod that has become a significant nuisance in gardens, nurseries, and greenhouses globally.

Host crops: This pest is a generalist feeder that damages a wide range of horticultural crops. Common targets include leafy vegetables like lettuce and cabbage, strawberries, tomatoes, and various ornamental plants such as hostas and irises. They are particularly destructive to young, tender seedlings and ripening fruits.

Biology and life cycle: Garden snails are hermaphroditic and highly active during damp, humid conditions and at night. They lay clutches of eggs in moist soil or sheltered crevices. The life cycle progresses from egg to juvenile and eventually to the adult stage. During periods of drought or cold, they retreat into their shells and seal themselves off with an epiphragm to survive until favorable conditions return.

Damage and harmfulness: The characteristic damage includes irregular, large holes eaten in leaves and fruits. Heavy infestations can result in total defoliation of small plants or the complete destruction of vegetable patches. Furthermore, the slime trails left by the snails on foliage not only decrease the plant's aesthetic value and photosynthesis efficiency but can also introduce pathogens, leading to secondary infections.

• Regular cultivation and hoeing to disturb soil and destroy egg-laying sites.
• Creating physical barriers such as crushed eggshells, coarse sand, or copper tape.
• Handpicking snails in the evening or early morning after irrigation.
• Using bait traps, including commercial traps or simple containers with beer.
• Applying molluscicides containing iron phosphate, which is safer for pets and wildlife.
