The black flathead borer (Capnodis cariosa) is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the Buprestidae family. These insects are known for their ability to thrive in warm climates, often causing widespread damage to fruit orchards by targeting the vascular tissues of host trees.

The pest primarily infests stone fruit species including almond, apricot, peach, and cherry trees. By feeding on the inner bark and phloem, both the adult beetles and their larvae disrupt the tree's ability to transport nutrients and water, severely weakening the host plant.
