Poplar borer beetle

Systematic position: The poplar borer beetle (Capnodis miliaris) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. This wood-boring beetle is a significant pest that causes severe damage to trees, particularly in arid regions where host plants are under environmental stress.

Crops: The primary hosts for this pest are species within the Salicaceae family, most notably poplars (Populus spp.) and sometimes willows (Salix spp.). It predominantly targets trees in shelterbelts, plantations, and urban landscapes, especially those suffering from water deficit or soil salinity.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Capnodis miliaris typically spans one to two years. Adults emerge in late spring or summer and are known for their marble-like patterned elytra. Females deposit eggs into the bark crevices near the root collar or lower stem. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the bark, tunneling extensively through the inner bark and cambium, which disrupts the tree's vascular system.

Damage and harmfulness: The larval activity is the most destructive phase. By feeding on the cambium and phloem, larvae sever the flow of nutrients and water throughout the tree. Symptoms of infestation include reduced foliage density, yellowing of leaves, branch dieback, and eventually the death of the entire tree if the infestation is severe. The presence of wood dust at the base of the tree is a common indicator of larval activity.

Control measures: Management requires an integrated approach focusing on prevention and the destruction of breeding sites.

• Sanitary logging and destruction of heavily infested trees before adult emergence.
• Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and soil management to increase natural resistance.
• Application of residual insecticides to tree trunks during the beetle flight period.
