The black buprestid beetle (Capnodis tenebricosa) is a significant wood-boring pest belonging to the Buprestidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is widely recognized by agronomists as a persistent threat to fruit trees, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.
This pest primarily attacks stone fruit species, including apricot, peach, plum, almond, and occasionally pome fruits. The presence of the beetle often goes unnoticed until the damage to the internal structure of the tree becomes irreversible, posing a severe risk to orchard longevity.
The biological cycle of this species is prolonged, with larvae developing within the root system for multiple years. The female beetle lays eggs in the soil near the root collar or in bark crevices.
