Carpocoris bug

The genus Carpocoris belongs to the shield bug family (Pentatomidae), order Hemiptera. These insects are widely distributed throughout the Palearctic region and are commonly found in fields, meadows, and gardens. Members of this genus are characterized by their shield-like body shape and varied coloration, ranging from yellowish-brown to reddish or almost black, depending on environmental factors.

This pest is a polyphage and causes damage to a wide variety of crops. The diet of the shield bug includes cereal crops, vegetables (particularly tomatoes and peppers), legumes, and various ornamental and wild plants. Both adults and nymphs feed on plant sap, piercing the soft tissues of stems, leaves, or fruits with their specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts.

The life cycle involves the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Adult bugs overwinter in plant debris, leaf litter, or under dry grass. In the spring, once temperatures remain consistently high, the insects emerge from diapause and begin feeding. Females lay eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves; nymphs hatch within 1–2 weeks and complete their development in 30–45 days.

Damage symptoms include punctures that lead to the deformation of plant organs, the appearance of necrotic spots, fruit drop, and loss of commercial quality. In cereal crops, damage often manifests as necrotic areas on the ear, which significantly reduces seed germination and overall grain quality. The severity of the infestation typically increases during hot and dry periods when bugs migrate to irrigated fields.

Control measures combine both agrotechnical and chemical strategies. Key practices include the systematic destruction of weed hosts and the removal of crop residues in the autumn to eliminate overwintering sites. If pest populations exceed economic thresholds, the application of insecticides—such as organophosphates or pyrethroids—is recommended, while ensuring adherence to pre-harvest intervals and safety regulations.
