Hairy shieldbug

Systematic position. The hairy shieldbug (Carpocoris purpureipennis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. It is a well-known agricultural pest characterized by a shield-shaped body, commonly found in meadows, gardens, and vast cereal fields throughout its range.

Crops damaged. This species acts as a polyphagous pest with a broad host range. It primarily targets cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and rye, but it is also frequently observed feeding on various legumes, vegetables, and wild herbaceous plants. These wild hosts often serve as vital refuges for the population during the early season.

Biology and lifecycle. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as leaf litter, hedgerows, or near woodland edges. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on developing vegetation. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The insect typically completes one generation per year, although favorable climatic conditions in southern regions can occasionally lead to a partial second generation.

Nature of damage and pest status. The damage is caused by the piercing-sucking mouthparts of both nymphs and adults. As they extract sap from stems, leaves, and developing grain, they inject digestive enzymes into the plant tissue. This process leads to the shriveling of kernels, significant yield loss, and a decrease in the quality of the harvested product, particularly regarding protein content and baking properties.

Control measures. Effective management of the hairy shieldbug relies on a multi-faceted approach. Key strategies include:

• Removal of weeds and wild host plants around field margins.
• Timely harvesting to reduce the period of exposure to the pest.
• Monitoring population densities during the milk-to-dough stage of grain development.
• Application of selective insecticides when threshold levels are exceeded.
