Systematic position: The Brazilian bean weevil (Caryedes brasiliensis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. This species is highly adapted to feeding on legume seeds, which makes it a significant threat to both field crops and stored pulses, requiring close monitoring in international trade.

Crops affected: This pest primarily targets seeds of various legume species, particularly those in the genus Dioclea. Biology and life cycle: Adult females lay their eggs directly on the surface of the legume seeds. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the seed, where they consume the endosperm and embryo throughout their developmental stages. Pupation occurs within a specialized chamber carved out inside the seed itself, protected from external environmental factors.

Damage patterns and economic importance: The larval feeding causes severe internal damage, effectively destroying the nutritional content of the beans. Once the development is complete, adult beetles emerge through circular exit holes, leaving the seeds hollowed out and worthless for consumption or propagation. High infestation rates result in catastrophic loss of grain weight and quality.
