Tamarind bruchid

Systematic position: The tamarind bruchid (Caryedon gonagra) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. It is a significant agricultural pest that is widely recognized for its ability to devastate stocks of legume seeds, particularly in tropical regions where it causes substantial economic losses.

Host plants: While the primary host is the tamarind (Tamarindus indica), this beetle is a polyphagous pest capable of infesting a wide range of legumes. It frequently attacks stored peanuts, chickpeas, various types of beans, and seeds of the Cassia species, making it a major concern for both farmers and the processing industry.

Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle is completed through complete metamorphosis. Adult females lay eggs on the surface of seed pods or individual seeds. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the seed, where they consume the endosperm and embryo, creating extensive tunnels that compromise the structural integrity of the seed.

Damage and severity: Infestation is characterized by circular exit holes created by emerging adults and hollowed-out kernels. The damage results in severe quantitative losses and significant qualitative degradation. Infested seeds lose their germination potential and often become contaminated with insect frass, rendering them unsuitable for food or export purposes.

Protection measures: Effective management requires a combination of strategies:

• Routine fumigation of storage facilities and infested batches to eliminate all life stages of the beetle.
• Implementation of strict phytosanitary measures to prevent the spread of the pest during international trade.
• Sanitation of warehouses, ensuring that spillages and infested debris are removed regularly.
• Utilization of hermetic storage technology which creates an oxygen-depleted environment, preventing larvae development.
