Groundnut bruchid

Caryedon notativentris is a serious stored product pest belonging to the seed beetle family (Bruchidae), within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a major threat to groundnut (peanut) storage facilities, where it thrives by infesting seeds and causing significant financial losses in agriculture and international trade.

This beetle primarily attacks the seeds of cultivated peanuts (Arachis hypogaea). Both in-shell pods and kernels are susceptible to infestation. Because the larvae feed internally on the nutrient-rich seed, the damage is often not apparent until the insect has already caused significant weight loss and internal destruction of the commodity.

The life cycle begins with the female depositing eggs on the surface of the pods or seeds. Upon hatching, the neonate larva bores directly through the seed coat. It then develops inside the kernel, consuming the endosperm and embryo. Pupation occurs within a characteristic, tough, oval-shaped cocoon constructed by the mature larva inside the seed or between seeds.

The damage caused by Caryedon notativentris is categorized by internal tunneling and the destruction of the seed coat, which leaves circular emergence holes on the surface of the peanut. Aside from direct weight loss, the pest introduces contaminants like frass and webbing, which drastically reduce the market value and viability of the groundnuts for planting.

Effective management requires a combination of strict sanitation and chemical intervention. Recommended strategies include:

• Maintaining clean storage facilities to eliminate breeding sites.
• Implementing regular inspection programs.
• Using controlled atmosphere or fumigation treatments (such as phosphine) for infested stocks.
• Ensuring proper seed drying to discourage rapid development of the pest population.
