Description
The Caryedon pallidus, commonly known as the groundnut seed beetle, is a significant pest that primarily targets stored agricultural products. Belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae, this insect is well-adapted to surviving within the seeds of leguminous plants. Its presence is most noted in regions where peanuts are cultivated, processed, and stored for long periods.
The primary host for this pest is the peanut (Arachis hypogaea). While it shows a strong preference for peanuts, the species can also infest other pulses and legumes. This makes it a major concern for food security and international trade, as the insect can easily be transported across borders via contaminated shipments of beans and nuts stored in warehouses or silos.
The biology of Caryedon pallidus involves a cycle where the female deposits eggs directly onto the seed coat. Upon hatching, the larva bores into the seed, feeding on the inner tissues. The entire developmental process, from the larval stage through pupation, occurs inside the seed. The adult beetle eventually emerges, leaving behind a distinct circular exit hole that serves as a diagnostic sign of infestation.
Damage caused by this beetle is both quantitative and qualitative. The larvae consume the embryo and endosperm, leading to a direct loss of seed weight and nutritional value. Furthermore, heavy infestations result in the contamination of the product with insect excreta and debris, rendering the seeds unmarketable and unsuitable for human or animal consumption, as well as significantly reducing their germination rate.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to pest control in storage environments. Key strategies include:
