Caryedon patialensis

Caryedon patialensis is a species of beetle belonging to the family Bruchidae (seed beetles) within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a major pest of stored products, specifically targeting the seeds of legume crops. Its ability to infest seeds while they are in storage makes it a significant concern for both farmers and the international grain trade.

This pest primarily infests various pulses and legume seeds. The larvae are specialized feeders that inhabit the inside of the seeds, consuming the cotyledons and embryonic tissue. This internal feeding mechanism allows the beetle to destroy the economic value of the produce while remaining hidden from casual visual inspections during the initial stages of the infestation.

The life cycle of this beetle is highly synchronized with the storage environment. Females typically oviposit on the surface of the seeds, and the hatching larvae immediately bore into the interior. Within the seed, the larva undergoes several developmental stages (instars) before pupating. Once the adult beetle emerges through a circular exit hole, it seeks a mate, and the cycle repeats, potentially leading to rapid population growth in warm warehouses.

The damage caused by Caryedon patialensis is severe and irreversible. Affected seeds show distinctive exit holes, which render the pulse product unsalable for human consumption and incapable of germination for planting. Heavy infestations lead to significant weight loss of the grain stocks and lower the nutritional quality due to the accumulation of frass and metabolic wastes.

Management and control strategies are essential to protect pulse stocks:

• Implementation of structural fumigation using approved chemicals to kill all life stages.
• Strict adherence to sanitation protocols to remove debris and residual infested grains.
• Maintaining optimal storage conditions, including controlled temperature and low humidity levels.
