Groundnut seed beetle

Systematic position: The groundnut seed beetle (Caryedon serratus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. It is a significant pest primarily affecting legume seeds, causing substantial economic losses in both agricultural fields and post-harvest storage facilities globally.

Host plants: This beetle is specialized in attacking groundnuts (peanuts), but it has a broad host range including various legumes such as soybeans, lentils, chickpeas, and cowpeas. It is also known to infest the seeds of several wild tree species like tamarind and acacia, which serve as reservoirs for the pest.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on the surface of the pods or seeds. Upon hatching, the larva bores directly into the seed, where it feeds on the internal nutrients. Under favorable temperatures, the life cycle completes in about 4 to 7 weeks.

Damage and economic impact: Larvae are the primary cause of destruction, consuming the internal parts of the kernel. Infested seeds exhibit characteristic circular emergence holes created by adults. The damage leads to significant weight loss, loss of viability, and contamination with frass, making the product unsuitable for market and vulnerable to secondary fungal infections.
